In Kazakhstan, up to 44 thousand migrants examined for TB over three years

More than 1600 tuberculosis patients were identified.
The results of the program "Comprehensive control plan for tuberculosis in the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2014-2020" were unveiled at a round table in Almaty.

In addition to the main results, the experience of effective cooperation with government agencies, international organizations, NGOs and medical organizations is presented. The doctors involved in the program and representatives of partner NGOs spoke about the peculiarities of working with migrant workers.

The main goal of the program is to remove barriers that limit access to TB diagnosis and treatment, provide access for migrant workers, create effective mechanisms for transboundary control and treatment of tuberculosis. Within three years we were able to achieve good results together with our partners. In particular, owing to providing access to the examination for tuberculosis among migrants, more than 1600 patients with tuberculosis were identified. Another equally important result is a constructive cooperation that has been formed between all partners of the project, and allows more effective solution of the problem," said manager of the program, representative of ProjectHOPE in Kazakhstan Bakhtiyar Babamuradov.

During the program, a network of migrant-friendly medical organizations was formed from more than 60 polyclinics and 10 anti-TB dispensaries, a model of NGO participation in monitoring tuberculosis among migrants in eight pilot regions was developed, and the country's NGO network was established and trained to monitor tuberculosis among migrants.

Also, access to the TB screening for more than 44,000 migrants is provided and more than 1,600 tuberculosis patients are identified, about 145,000 migrants are covered by means of outreach work. Within the framework of the program, the majority of migrants with tuberculosis (internal and external) during the period of treatment in the outpatient phase were provided with monthly motivation support.

In addition, according to Mariyam Sianozova, Senior Regional Director of ProjectHOPE for Europe and Eurasia, the program was implemented in Kazakhstan, but it includes a rather significant regional component. The solution of the problems of labour migration and tuberculosis is not only the task of one country. To achieve success, the efforts of all countries of the region are necessary for creating joint mechanisms for the control and treatment of the disease.

I would like to note that the projects of inter-state bilateral agreements on transit control of TB in the Central Asian region are developed, and three regional meetings of a high level are held. All this creates a good basis for further regional cooperation, which we will develop as part of the program’s continuation and a new grant," said Mariyam Sianozova.
