NSC: Six banks of Kazakhstan suffered from cyber attacks in 2017

Many banks hide such incidents because of fear of image losses, the NSC stated.

Astana. 27 September. Kazakhstan Today - Many banks hide such incidents because of fear of image losses, the NSC stated.

Six banks of the second level of Kazakhstan in 2017 have suffered from cyber attacks; only one of them has asked for the help in intelligence agencies, the representative of the public technical service of Kazakhstan National Security Committee Evgeny Yemelyanov reported.

"This year have undergone the phishing scam (the author's note: a type of Internet fraud with the purpose to obtain confidential data) a number of the Kazakhstan banks. Mailing was on behalf of National bank, and the domain has been besides forged. One letter has been added, and mailing has been made both to employees of bank, and his employees who have reacted in due time. The domain was blocked. It should be noted that banks unwillingly ask us for the help and inform. According to our information, six banks have suffered. Officially one bank has asked us for the help. Banks hide incidents for maintenance of image and so on," Yemelyanov reported during a round table concerning ensuring information security.

According to him, six banks financially haven't suffered.

According to him, other case of a phishing is recorded in one of the national companies where the malefactor has sent the letter to accounting service of the company on behalf of the head with the instruction to make transaction for quite large sum.

"The letter has come to that person who is authorized to do it, from the head of the company. All his these mails have absolutely coincided, but the vigilance of the employee has worked. The matter is that the domain on which mail is registered has been registered not in a zone of Kazakhstan, and in Colombia. The employee of the national company who has addressed us subsequently has paid attention to it. We have contacted a hosting of the company in the USA and have blocked this domain," Yemelyanov told.

As the speaker emphasized, the malefactor was in details prepared for this attack.

"He has studied work on the old companies. He knew who should write the letter and that should be written, knew these directors," he specified.

It should be noted that NSC was engaged in investigation of cyber attacks since 2011. During the period from 2011 to 2017 have processed more than 79 thousand computer incidents there. In recent months phishing swindlers became more active: only in the first half of the year department has registered 99 such cases.

We will remind that in the Global index of cyber security Kazakhstan takes the 83rd place.
