Al Hilal Bank Kazakhstan eyes retail sector

Speaking on the side lines of the Global Islamic Finance Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Abraham explained that Islamic finance has been a tough sell to Kazakhstan's population, who are sold on rates, not religion.

Almaty. September 20. Kazakhstan Today - Al Hilal Bank Kazakhstan, the country's sole Islamic bank which currently caters to high end corporates and government sectors, is looking to start offering consumer banking services by the end of the year.

"We've just done a market survey and have decided that we will venture into the retail side. That is on the cards for either later in 2012 or early 2013," explained Prasad Abraham, the bank's Chief Executive Officer, in an interview with Islamic Business & Finance, CPI Financial reports.

Speaking on the side lines of the Global Islamic Finance Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Abraham explained that Islamic finance has been a tough sell to Kazakhstan's population, who are sold on rates, not religion.

Even though the bank has experienced rapid growth other the last three years, Abraham said that there is still a long way to go. "We are just getting close to a one per cent market share," he said. "There are 40 banks in Kazakhstan, and the top six bank account for 75 per cent of the market share. The remaining 34 are struggling for 25 per cent. However, our growth has been higher than average, and we look forward to more Islamic banks joining the country."
