Kazakhstan and Turkey have agreed to nearly double the number of permitted scheduled flights on major and tourist routes, from 120 to 224 a week, Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee said.
The agreement was reached during talks between the two countries’ aviation authorities in Istanbul on Aug. 13-14. Following the talks, the parties signed a new memorandum of understanding on civil aviation.
On major routes - from Istanbul to Astana, Almaty and Shymkent, and from Ankara to Astana and Almaty - the number of permitted flights for airlines from both countries was increased from 76 to 138 a week.
On tourist routes from Antalya and Bodrum to cities in Kazakhstan, the cap was raised from 44 to 86 flights a week.
As a result, airlines from the two countries will be able to operate up to 224 flights a week on these routes, compared with the previous limit of 120.
Carriers will be allowed to operate up to 14 flights a week on other routes. The committee said this would enable the launch of new direct services between cities in Kazakhstan and Turkey.
Air China was previously reported to have increased the number of flights between Astana and Beijing to six a week.
