Almaty. February 20. Kazakhstan Today - At a meeting in the government attendees have discussed the readiness of regions to the period of floods. The Kazakh Minister of Emergency Situations Vladimir Bozhko said that the snowfall in Akmola, Kostanai, and Karaganda regions was 20-50% more than the average annual level and in the Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions this level exceeded the norm by 1.5 times.

According to Caspionet, currently, regions have developed flood protection programmes. This year the budget for flood control programmes has been increased from 5.5 billion tenge to 14.5 billion tenge. Allocated money will be used for cleaning of snow, strengthening of banks in riverbeds, cleaning of canals and preparation of communal systems, spouting and storm sewers. Additionally, the Minister of Emergency Situation noted that the Almaty, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Karaganda regions and city of Almaty are monitoring the water level from space. Summarizing the results of the meeting, Serik Akhmetov noted that regional authorities and emergency situations services should prevent emergency situations in the thawing season.

"In general, the situation is under control. Today, regional governors have reported about the readiness of regions. I would like to ask region governors to monitor the current situation. Spring, just like winter, comes unexpectedly and usually forecasts of meteorologists differ from the reality. We should be ready for the thawing season," said Serik Akhmetov, Kazakh Prime Minister.

"The situation in the Almaty region is difficult. Although all snow at plains has melted, there is a lot of snow in the mountains. The situation in the East Kazakhstan region is also difficult. Northern regions should also be ready. If there will be steady melting of snow, the soil will sponge all water but in case of rapid melting, the region may face emergency situations," said Vladimir Bozhko, Kazakh Minister of Emergency Situations.
