Kazakhstan joining BTC project to be discussed in April

Baku. April 6. Kazakhstan Today - The final coordination of the project of intergovernmental agreement between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan on transportation of Kazakh oil through Baku - Tbilisi - Ceyhan pipeline (BTC) will take place in Baku in the end of April, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan Andar Shukputov informed the journalists, the agency correspondent reports.

The delegation headed by the executive director of "KazMunaiGas" Kairgeldy Kabyldin visited Baku on April 1-2 during which the last project amendments to the intergovernmental agreement were discussed.

"The work over the document is at the final stage. The governmental delegation of Kazakhstan, most likely at the level of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources will arrive in Baku on April 20 for the final coordination of parties’ positions for the agreement preparation to be signed,” the diplomat said.

The agreement can be signed within the framework of the Kazakh PM Daniyal Akhmetov visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the summit of the Presidents of the states and the heads of the member-states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) scheduled for May or during solemn ceremony of the first tanker shipment with Azerbaijani oil from port Jeyhan scheduled for the end of June of this year. "If all the questions are duly considered, the agreement can be signed during ECO summit or at shipment of the first tanker from port Jeyhan,” A. Shukputov said.

Negotiations between Azerbaijan party and "KazMunaiGas" about Kazakhstan joining BTJ project have been conducted since November, 2002. The intergovernmental agreement between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan about transportation of Kazakhstan oil through BTJ pipeline provides creation of Aktau - Baku transportation system of Kazakhstan oil to its further transportation through BTJ oil pipeline. At the initial stage transportation through BTJ of 7, 5 million tons of Kazakhstan oil with the subsequent increase in this volume up to 20 million tons is planned.

BTJ oil pipeline extent makes 1767 km, in Azerbaijan - 443 km, in Georgia - 248 km, and in Turkey - 1076 km. Oil pipeline capacity- 50 million tons of oil a year. BTJ shareholders are the companies members of " BTC Co" (30,1 % of individual share), Unocal (8,9 %), Statoil (8,71 %), TPAO (6,53 %), Itochu (3,4 %), Amerada Hess (2,36 %), ENI (5 %), ConocoPhillips (2,5 %), Inpex (2,5 %), Total (5 %). Thus, ENI, ConocoPhillips, Inpex and Total participate in the tender of Kashagan deposit.
