Kazakhstan's ENRC to receive 1.3bn euro in Chinese loans

Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) is to receive up to $1.9bn (1.3bn euro) in Chinese loans, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Almaty. February 24. Kazakhstan Today - Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) is to receive up to $1.9bn (1.3bn euro) in Chinese loans, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) is to receive up to $1.9bn (1.3bn euro) in Chinese loans in a deal that underlines Kazakhstan's growing power over the London-listed miner, The Telegraph reported.

The loan will help the FTSE 100 company further to develop its chrome unit, and Kazakhstan's largest iron ore mine. ENRC refused to confirm the loan, but Kazakhstan's president revealed it had been negotiated during a three-day trip to Beijing.

"Thanks to our visit, Kazakhstan's ENRC company was provided with $1.5bn for further development of Sokolov-Sarbai mining production complex, and $400m for chromium industry development," said Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The money will come, at least in part, from a $1.7bn loan given to Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund by China Development Bank. The sovereign wealth fund signed the deal on Tuesday, and is likely to channel the money to ENRC over the coming year.

President Nazarbayev finished his visit to China on Wednesday, with a bevvy of deals which showed deepening ties between resource-rich Kazakhstan and its fast-growing Eastern neighbour.

This includes loans for a high-speed rail link, upgrades to the Pavlodar refinery and a new petrochemical complex, plus a deal for Kazakhstan to supply up to 40pc of China's nuclear fuel.
