Oil transit agreement to be prepared by May 10 – Azerbaijan first Vice PM

Baku. April 17. Kazakhstan Today - The intergovernmental agreement between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan on transportation of Kazakhstan oil through Baku - Tbilisi - Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline will be prepared by the second decade of May, the first Vice PM of Azerbaijan Abbas Abbasov informed during the interview with the agency correspondent.

"The final round of negotiations of working groups of two countries will take place in Baku on April 29. Kazakhstan party experts will arrive in Baku within the governmental delegation to participate in the fourth session of Azerbaijan - Kazakhstan intergovernmental commission, carry on negotiations with the Ministries of Industry and Energy, Transport of Azerbaijan, and other departments for the document coordination," A. Abbasov said.

Earlier, Azerbaijan Ambassador Andar Shukputov informed the agreement may be signed during Daniyal Akhmetov visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the summit of the Presidents of the states and the heads of the member-states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) scheduled for May or during solemn ceremony of the first tanker shipment with Azerbaijani oil from port Ceyhan scheduled for the end of June of this year. "If all the questions are duly considered, the agreement can be signed during ECO summit or at shipment of the first tanker from port Ceyhan.

Negotiations between Azerbaijan party and "KazMunaiGas" about Kazakhstan joining BTC project have been conducted since November, 2002. The intergovernmental agreement between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan about transportation of Kazakhstan oil through BTC pipeline provides creation of Aktau - Baku transportation system of Kazakhstan oil to its further transportation through BTC oil pipeline. At the initial stage transportation through BTC of 7, 5 million tons of Kazakhstan oil with the subsequent increase in this volume up to 20 million tons is planned.

BTC oil pipeline extent makes 1767 km, in Azerbaijan - 443 km, in Georgia - 248 km, and in Turkey - 1076 km. Oil pipeline capacity- 50 million tons of oil a year. BTC shareholders are the companies members of " BTC Co" (30,1 % of individual share), Unocal (8,9 %), Statoil (8,71 %), TPAO (6,53 %), Itochu (3,4 %), Amerada Hess (2,36 %), ENI (5 %), ConocoPhillips (2,5 %), Inpex (2,5 %), Total (5 %). Thus, ENI, ConocoPhillips, Inpex and Total participate in the tender of Kashagan deposit.
