Opinion: Kazakhstan citizens withdraw funds from banks

After last year's growth in the portfolio of retail deposits, this year the outflow continues - in January by 0.9%, in February-March - by 0.4%
In March 2018, retail deposits decreased by 0.4% (35.4 billion tenge), to 8.1 trillion tenge. The total deposit portfolio of second-tier banks of Kazakhstan in the same period decreased slightly less - by 0.2% (40.2 billion tenge), to 16.4 trillion tenge. The share of retail deposits in the total portfolio slightly decreased from 49.3% to 49.2%, RANKING.KZ reports.

At the same time, year-to-year retail deposits of second-tier banks of Kazakhstan still demonstrate growth: by 6.7% (510.2 billion tenge) by March 2017. In general, the outflow in the deposit market was 1.1% (177.8 billion tenge.

Out of 32 banks in Kazakhstan’s market, the volume of retail deposits for March was increased by 20 second-tier banks.

The leader was Kaspi Bank, with an increase of 7.8 billion tenge (0.9%), to 889.2 billion tenge. The annual growth was 135.8 billion tenge (18%). The share of the second-tier banks of the Republic of Kazakhstan for March grew from 10.9% to 11%, a year earlier it was 9.9%.

It is interesting that the Bank of Astana being in the second place in terms of growth, which in March (before the criticism from the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and a sharp weakening in the bank's rating) had good indications. The monthly increase was 5.6 billion tenge (7.4%), to 81.5 billion tenge. For the year, there was an almost twofold increase, by 40.1 billion tenge. The share of the second-tier banks of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the month increased from 0.9% to 1%, a year earlier it was 0.5%.

The third place was taken by Nur Bank with an increase by 5 billion tenge (5.2%), up to 102.2 billion tenge. An increase over the year was 32.8 billion tenge (47.2%). The share of second-tier banks of Kazakhstan increased from 1.2% to 1.3%, a year earlier it was 0.9%.

Of 27 banks that offer Kazakhstan citizens to open retail deposits, only 6 banks allow to open a deposit with a minimum amount of 1 thousand tenge.

The average annual interest rate of deposits for 1 year is 12.6% (in the market – 11.7%). The highest annual effective interest rate can be found in Home Credit Bank and Capital Bank – 14%. Ex-Im Bank follows with the interest rate of 13.8%.

To open a deposit without an initial deposit offer is presented by 3 out of 6 STBs – Ex-Im Bank, Bank Central Credit and Qazaq Banki. The remaining 3 STBs - Home Credit, Capital and Kaspi open a deposit with a minimum investment amount of 1,000 tg.

The National Bank of Kazakhstan from April 28 suspended the license for accepting deposits from individuals, opening bank accounts of individuals of Qazaq Banki with until July 27, 2018, inclusive.
