Russia banned import of Japanese fish

Russia has temporarily banned import of fish and seafood from 242 fish processing plants across Japan's main island, Honshu, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Almaty. April 7. Kazakhstan Today - Russia has temporarily banned import of fish and seafood from 242 fish processing plants across Japan's main island, Honshu, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Russia, concerned about potential radiation contamination, said Wednesday it is suspending fish and seafood imports from Japan, UPI reported.

"The restrictions were introduced after an analysis of threats and risks which arose after the accident on the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant," the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight said in a statement.

RIA Novosti reported the decision to halt the importation of fish and seafood from Japan came as Japan succeeded in stopping highly radioactive water leaking into the ocean from the power plant that was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

International concerns caused Japan to set a legal limit Tuesday for radioactive iodine levels in seafood it exports.
