Almaty. January 26. Kazakhstan Today - The five-day World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2011 will start today in the Swiss town Davos, the agency reports.

World leaders, top businessmen and leading spiritual and cultural figures are heading to the Swiss ski resort of Davos today for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum against a backdrop of rising inflation, slowing growth and social unrest, The Telegraph reported.

The annual meeting in 2011 will be held under the theme: Shared Norms for the New Reality. There will be a wide range of topics discussed, including general topics such as globalization, employment, future economic growth and political stability, as well as lesser known topics, including two events called 'Biology's Frontier' and 'Secrets of the Sea'.

Based in Geneva, the WEF is an international non-governmental organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industrial agendas.

The forum, initially known as the European Management Forum, was founded by Klaus M. Schwab, a professor of business policy in Switzerland, in 1971.

In 1987, the forum changed its name to the World Economic Forum and sought to broaden its vision by focusing on international conflicts. Its agenda now includes the most pressing problems facing the world, ranging from political, military and security concerns to bilateral and regional issues.

Many key figures from the economics and business will be in attendance, including Nouriel Roubini, the man dubbed "Dr Doom" for his warnings of the financial crisis, and Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, the world's largest communications services group, who will both be speaking on Wednesday morning.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev will also go ahead with his trip to the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos, despite the bomb attack in Moscow, BBC informed.
