Deputies of the Kurultai unanimously elected Aibek Dadebay as speaker of Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament, a Kazakhstan Today correspondent reports.

Dadebay’s candidacy for the post was earlier nominated by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The speaker of the Kurultai is elected from among its deputies by secret ballot and must receive a majority of votes from the total number of lawmakers.

Aibek Dadebay has become the first speaker of the Kurultai following Kazakhstan’s transition to a unicameral parliament.

Dadebay was born in Almaty on April 1, 1980. He graduated from Ablai Khan Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages.

Over the years, he worked in the Senate administration, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, the Presidential Chancellery and the Presidential Affairs Administration. He served as Head of the Presidential Affairs Administration from 2022 to 2024 and headed the Presidential Administration from February 2024 to May 2026.

During the Kurultai’s first session, deputies took the oath of office. The agenda also includes the election of deputy speakers, determining the number and names of standing committees, and electing their chairs and members.
