IAEA and ITER signed cooperation agreement

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the project of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) signed cooperation agreement on Monday, the agency reports referring to IAEA press service.

Almaty. October 15. Kazakhstan Today - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the project of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) signed cooperation agreement on Monday, the agency reports referring to IAEA press service.

According to the press service, the agreement was signed by the IAEA Assistant General Director, Jury Sokolov, and ITER General Director, Kaname Ikeda, on October 13, on the first day of 22nd Conference on Nuclear Energy organized under IAEA aegis in Geneva that will last till October 18.

"IAEA played an important role in development of ITER project. We are looking forward to long and dynamic cooperation," K. Ikeda noted.

"ITER is a vivid example of successful organization of the large international project. We are proud that IAEA has played an important role in its development," J. Sokolov noted.

According to the IAEA press release, cooperation agreement provides information interchange, participation of experts of two organizations in assemblies and meetings, among which are sessions of ITER Council, annual IAEA conferences and its scientific and technical committees. The agreement will expand geography of researches in the countries that now have no nuclear programs, but wish to participate in scientific researches in this sphere in the future.

The agreement has come into force and will be forwarded to the UN Secretary General for its registration and publication.
