Kazakhstan and Turkey plan to consider increasing regular flights

Almaty. July 24. Kazakhstan Today - Turkish aviation authorities are ready to discuss the issue of increasing the number of regular flights between the two countries in September of this year.

"Now, in the new situation, the Turkish side is ready to sit down at the negotiating table in September this year and consider an intergovernmental agreement on extending the horizons of our relationship. In particular, we are talking about increasing the number of regular flights between Kazakhstan and Turkey," Chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee of Transport and Communications Ministry Beken Seidakhmetov said in an exclusive interview for the Prime Minister's official website.

Earlier, the Kazakh side raised the issue of expansion of geography of flights to Turkish cities, and offered to involve the regional airports of the country. However, the Turkish aviation authorities permits scheduled flights only to Istanbul.

In the opinion of the Chairman of the Committee of Civil Aviation, the ban on foreign charter flights will happen only when the Kazakh airlines will be willing to cover the needs of this market. "In order to avoid a vacuum in transport operations it is necessary to adopt a flexible solution taking into account the interests of all parties," he added.

"A legal mechanism of transition to the final ban on foreign charter flights will be provided later. The preliminary term is October 1 of this year, taking into account the real possibilities of our companies," the head of the committee emphasized.

"Until the end of the season, our passengers will not be affected. There should be no hype around the situation with charter flights to Turkey," he stressed.

"In fact, we just wanted to protect our market. We have a number of complaints from passengers in relation to the Turkish charter airlines, such as the language barrier, flight delays and other violations of the rights of our passengers. The recent egregious case was when because of the bankruptcy of a Turkish air carrier thousands of our citizens were left abandoned in a foreign country, and our government was forced to go to great expense to bring them home. After sending an appeal to the aviation authorities of Turkey to clarify the situation, we have not received a response," Seidakhmetov stated.

On the other hand, an important issue is economic feasibility. Today, almost 60% of the charter flights are performed by Turkish operators, in monetary terms they get 50-60 million U.S. dollars every year.

These considerable funds, according to Seidakhmetov, could go to the development of the Kazakh aviation, purchase of new aircrafts and expansion of flight geography.
