Kazakhstan takes part in antinuclear meeting in NYC

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the participants of the special meeting to immediately accede to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty as well as to follow the example of Kazakhstan and support the complete renunciation and disposal of weapons of mass destruction.

Almaty. September 10. Kazakhstan Today - New York City has hosted a special session of the General Assembly with the assistance of Kazakhstan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations as a follow-up of the anti-nuclear forum in Astana, Kazakhstan Today reports.

According to Caspionet, in his video message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the participants of the special meeting to immediately accede to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty as well as to follow the example of Kazakhstan and support the complete renunciation and disposal of weapons of mass destruction.

Randy Rydell, Senior Expert at the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs said that the issue on the agenda is not only the completion of nuclear testing as all of this is part of the path that leads to the complete abandonment of nuclear weapons, so he actively encouraged everyone to solve this problem. Mr Rydell also noted the outstanding leadership qualities of Kazakhstan which attracted global attention to this problem.

"I think that Kazakhstan's role in supporting such initiatives is very important as there should be a leader in this regard. Kazakhstan is well suited for this role because we have a moral right to pursue this cause as we gave up our nuclear arsenal and are continuing to develop nuclear power for peaceful uses and also making a significant contribution to the cause of disarmament and strengthening the non-proliferation regime. I think that Kazakhstan has taken a respectable position in this area", Timur Zhantikin, chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency said.

Jonathan Granoff, the President of the Global Security Institute, said that Kazakhstan's parliament was the first parliamentary body in the world to hold a major international conference on the need to eliminate nuclear weapons, so he was glad to have taken part in it and thinks that people in Kazakhstan should be proud of their parliament. As a US citizen and resident of our planet, he expressed gratitude to the people of Kazakhstan, President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Lower House of Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats on behalf of many people.

Astana was followed by Moscow with the 2012 Nonproliferation Conference. Its focus is nuclear disarmament, nuclear energy, as well as prospects of creating zones free of weapons of mass destruction.
