Kazakhstan will preside in OSCE even if it will not fulfill obligations taken up in Madrid - PA OSCE Secretary General

Astana. July 2. Kazakhstan Today - Kazakhstan will preside in OSCE in 2010 even if the obligations taken up in Madrid in 2007 will not be fulfilled. OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General Oliver Spenser stated today at the press conference in Astana, the agency reports.

"Yes, this decision has already been accepted and Kazakhstan will preside in OSCE," O. Spenser said answering a journalist's question - whether possible non-fulfillment of obligations taken up by Kazakhstan can influence OSCE decision.

As it was informed earlier, during the press conference the US Congressman Alsi Hastings said that the USA is ready to work with Kazakhstan during its chairmanship, but urged the country to keep those promises made at the meeting at the level of ministers in Madrid last year.

The US Senator Benjamin Cardin stated that the country will play a leading role in OSCE in 2010. "All of us would like to thank the leadership and the leaders of Kazakhstan that they have made this step, but I would like to also support Congressman Hastings and remind of those obligations incurred by Kazakhstan at last year's meeting in Madrid," he noted.

The US Senator reminded that these obligations "concern the rights of political parties, reforms connected with elections, protection of the rights of religious organizations and mass media freedom."
