Leaders of Turkic Speaking States signed Istanbul Declaration

The Leaders of Turkic Speaking States signed the Istanbul Declaration, the agency reports citing the president's press service.

Astana. September 17. Kazakhstan Today - The Leaders of Turkic Speaking States signed the Istanbul Declaration, the agency reports citing the president's press service.

Yesterday, the Presidents of Kazakhstan - Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Turkish Republic - Abdulla Gul, the Azerbaijan Republic - Ilham Aliyev, Kyrgyzstan's interim President - Roza Otunbaeva, and Turkmenistan - Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov took part in X summit of Leaders of Turkic Speaking States.

According to the president's press service, the Presidents discussed the work of Secretariat of the Turkic Council, the Senior Officials Council, and the Academy of the Turkic World. The leaders exchanged opinions on preservation of peace and security in the region, development of economic cooperation, and settlement of the situation in Kyrgyzstan.

Following the results of the summit, the leaders of Turkic Speaking countries signed the Istanbul Declaration.

The leaders of the states agreed to appoint Turkish diplomat Halil Akinchi as the First Secretary General of Secretary, who will officially assume his responsibilities after the Nakhichevan Agreement comes into force.

The leaders signed an agreement about creation of the Council of Cooperation of Turkic Speaking states during the last year's summit in Nakhichevan on October 3, 2009. The headquarters of the Council will be in Istanbul.

The leaders also decided to celebrate the signing day (3 October) of the Nakhchivan Agreement as the Turkic Speaking States Cooperation Day.

The leaders decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the independence of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in 2011.

The Presidents welcomed the proposal of Turkmenistan to organize a Turkic Speaking States cultural festival in Ashkhabad in 2011.
