Migration flows will increase in the world - expert

Astana held the International Roundtable under the theme 'Migration: New Trends and Directions.'
Director-General of the representation office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Kazakhstan Thomas Helm suggests that trends in migration will increase like never before in the near future.

It is like there are no other problems in Germany except emigration. However, it is for sure the slight inaccuracy in perceptions, which reveals the problem and theme's significance. I believe that migration and trends in migration will increase like never before in the near future. It is my opinion, and that is what I see around the world," said Thomas Helm.

According to him, the number of migrants constantly increases and said that economic problems and military conflicts are the main causes.

The number of migrants increases, and it is because of various reasons, whether because of economic reasons, or military conflicts occurring in the world. Some leave their countries, in addition to regular migration, I mean labor migration. In the world that gives a home to 8 billion people, this issue will concern each developed country," he said.

Helm said that this issue will also concern Kazakhstan as the country has increasing economic success.

Of course, many problems can lead to migration, as well as migration can lead to many chances. It is not only a problem but also an opportunity. I think that we should discuss the way we are to fight this problem. I would like to make a statement related to our history. Constructing walls is not a solution. History has seen such a case when they built walls, and it did not work. It is to be one of the big challenges," he said.

Thomas Helm also thinks that Kazakhstan and Germany can equally exchange views and recommendations on integration and migration.

The International Roundtable is held in the Gumilyev Eurasian National University. It was attended by Majilis deputies of Kazakh Parliament, Professor at Bielefeld University Thomas Faist, as well as scholars and students of the university.
