New round of talks on Syria began in Astana

The talks are held in closed session.
Kazakhstan’s capital holds bilateral and trilateral talks as part of the Astana process on Syria with the participation of delegations of all guarantor states.

As they informed in a press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the talks are held in closed session. A delegation of the government of Syria led Bashar Jaafari and a UN delegation also arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan. Special representative of the UN Secretary General for Syria Staffan de Mistura will arrive in Astana today.

Arrival of a delegation of the Syrian opposition is expected in night on May 15.

We note that in addition to the guarantor states – Iran. Russia and Turkey – delegations of governments and oppositional groups are invited to the meeting, as well as the UN and the USA and Jordan as observer states.

According to the information of the guarantor state, at the talks the sides intend to consider the current situation in Syria in Astana, including in de-escalation zones, to discuss humanitarian issues and measures to strengthen trust, as well as to coordinate further steps on promoting the settlement of the crisis in the Arab country.
