State Secretary held meeting with UN Special Rapporteur on Torture

The State Secretary of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kanat Saudabayev, met in Akorda the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Novak, during his visit to Kazakhstan, the agency reports citing the president's press service.

Astana. May 14. Kazakhstan Today - The State Secretary of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kanat Saudabayev, met in Akorda the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Novak, during his visit to Kazakhstan, the agency reports citing the president's press service.

"The meeting took place, following the results of the visit of M. Novak to Kazakhstan, during which the UN Rapporteur held the meetings with chairmen of the corresponding ministries and departments and paid inspection visits to the official bodies of correctional system and specialized medical institutions," the press service informs.

According to the press service, last year Kazakhstan declared in accordance with the articles 21 and 22 of Convention Against Torture, having given to Kazakhstan citizens the right to submit an individual complaint the Committee Against Torture. Kazakhstan also ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Protection of persons, would, in the terms of the Resolution, be "strengthened by non-judicial means of a preventive nature, based on regular visits to places of detention."
