Third summit of leaders of Caspian littoral states planned in Baku in October-November, 2008

The third summit of the leaders of the near-Caspian states will take place in Baku in October-November, 2008. Vice Foreign Minister of Iran, Mehdi Safari, head of the Iranian delegation at the 23rd session of the special working group on the Caspian Sea informed on Thursday, the agency reports.

Baku. September 5. Kazakhstan Today - The third summit of the leaders of the near-Caspian states will take place in Baku in October-November, 2008. Vice Foreign Minister of Iran, Mehdi Safari, head of the Iranian delegation at the 23rd session of the special working group on the Caspian Sea informed on Thursday, the agency reports.

M. Safari noted that as of present time the working group has coordinated 60 - 70 % of the project of convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. "All the parties support activization of the process on coordination of the convention for prompt solution of this issue," he said.

Concerning Iran position in regards to construction of pipelines along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, M. Safari noted that official Teheran is against construction of transcaspian pipelines.

"We are against it as it can negatively influence the ecology of the Caspian Sea. We already have Iranian and Russian directions for transportation of the Caspian energy resources and in such conditions there is no necessary for risking the ecology of the Caspian Sea," the diplomat emphasized.
