UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief to visit Turkmenistan

The UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Asma Jahangir, will visit Turkmenistan at the invitation of the government from September 4 till September 10, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

Almaty. September 4. Kazakhstan Today - The UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Asma Jahangir, will visit Turkmenistan at the invitation of the government from September 4 till September 10, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

According to the message, A. Jahangir plans to estimate the situation in regards to freedom of worship and confession in the country, as well as realization by the government of the regulations of the UN Declaration on liquidation of all forms of intolerance and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief.

A. Jahangir will visit Ashgabat, Dashoguz and Turkmenbashi. The UN Special Rapporteur will hold the meetings with the representatives of the government responsible for the issues connected with freedom of religion or belief and with the representatives of religious associations, civil society, the UN establishments and other international organizations.

The UN representative will prepare the report on how the government of Turkmenistan carries out its international obligations on maintenance of the rights of its citizens on freedom of worship and belief and will pass it to the UN Council for Human Rights.

A. Jahangir is an independent expert. He was appointed for this post in 2004 by his predecessor of Council for Human Rights. On December 14, 2007 the Council prolonged his mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur for three years.
