Vladimir Putin to visit Kazakhstan in May

The President of Kazakhstan met with the newly elected Russian leader in Moscow at the CSTO anniversary summit. This is the first bilateral meeting of the two leaders of partner countries after the inauguration of Vladimir Putin.

Astana. 17 May. Kazakhstan Today - Vladimir Putin has accepted the invitation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev to visit Astana in the coming days, Kazakhstan Today reports referring to Khabar agency.

The President of Kazakhstan met with the newly elected Russian leader in Moscow at the CSTO anniversary summit. This is the first bilateral meeting of the two leaders of partner countries after the inauguration of Vladimir Putin.

Opening the meeting, the Russian President highlighted the role of his Kazakh counterpart in the creation of regional associations in the former Soviet Union. Nursultan Nazarbayev, in his turn, congratulated Vladimir Putin on his victory in the recent presidential election and wished him every success.

We have no unresolved issues, the President said. On May 25, Russia and Kazakhstan will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Taking into account the creation of the Customs Union and other associations, it has to be updated, said Nursultan Nazarbayev. He also proposed inserting corresponding amendments and extending the life of this document.

"I am in a nice position now that I do not need to specify the characteristic of our relations. You are one of the initiators of the deepening of integration processes in the post-Soviet area. You are also one of the authors of the Eurasian economic integration, the Customs Union and the future Eurasian Union. You are the real author of it. And I am very pleased that all of our joint ideas have been implemented into tangible actions and we now have a good ground to go on further," Vladimir Putin said.

"We are strategic allies, partners and close neighbours. I think the relations between Russia and Kazakhstan are an example for the former Soviet Union on how close they can be developed and be effective. The Customs Union, the Common Economic Space and the 25 billion trade turnover signify that Russia is one of our largest trading partners. We also have regional cooperation because 70% of our bilateral trade accounts for the bordering regions of our countries. As we agreed, we are scheduled to meet in Pavlodar at the end of this year," Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

Following the jubilee session of the CSTO Security Council, the Kremlin also staged an informal summit of the CIS heads of states. It was convened at the initiative of the Russian party in connection with the election of Vladimir Putin as Russian President. The summit took place one week after the inauguration, which confirms the CIS as a priority for Russia's foreign policy. The CIS leaders discussed the current state of affairs in the development of the Commonwealth.
