WMS Global Training program on reporters' safety held in Beijing

The lectures were focused mainly on how reporters can survive and do their job as effectively and safely as possible in the face of war, conflict, plague, natural disasters, etc.

Almaty. July 5. Kazakhstan Today - Global Training program on reporters' safety organized by Xinhua News Agency and the World Media Summit (WMS) Secretariat held in Beijing on June, 18-21, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Senior professionals from Xinhua News Agency, Reuters, Kyodo News, Al Jazeera Chanel gave lectures focusing on practical strategies for journalists working in hostile environment. Furthermore, the representatives of Bastion, the Russian program for journalists working in the face of war and conflicts, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International ISOS, company that provides medical and legal support all over the world, presented their programs.

The lectures were focused mainly on how reporters can survive and do their job as effectively and safely as possible in the face of war, conflict, plague, natural disasters, etc.

The five-day training program is being attended by 50 journalists from 30 countries including Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America representing China's Xinhua News Agency, Corriere della Sera newspaper, Russia-24 Chanel, Prensa Latina News Agency, Afghanistan's Bakhtar News Agency, Islamic Republic News Agency, BelTA, Belarusian Telegraph Agency, Ukrainian National News Agency Ukrinform, Kazakhstan Today News Agency and others.

"According to the International Federation of Journalists, a total of 2,270 media professionals have been killed in action since 1990", Zhou Zongmin, secretary-general of the WMS Secretariat said. He noted that journalism is one of the most dangerous businesses in the world, thus the protection of journalists' safety is a daunting challenge.

The World Media Summit opened today in Moscow, Russia. It involves over 300 top managers of 213 mass media from 102 countries. These are presidents, directors general and chief editors of such news agencies, television channels and radio stations as Associated Press, BBC, Reuters, NBC, Al Jazeera, Kyodo, Xinhua, MENA. Leaders of nine international organizations, including UNESCO, as well as the delegation of the European Parliament, are invited to take part in the summit.

The World Media Summit, launched by Xinhua and eight other major media organizations, was first held in Beijing in October, 2009, and attended by about 300 representatives from more than 170 media outlets around the world. The Al Jazeera Network and the New York Times Company joined the presidium in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
