Only 5 % out of 95 tons of heroin annually delivered to the world market from Afghanistan through Central Asia is arrested. The Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center (CARICC) in Almaty informs, the agency reports.

Almaty. November 29. Kazakhstan Today - Only 5 % out of 95 tons of heroin annually delivered to the world market from Afghanistan through Central Asia is arrested. The Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center (CARICC) in Almaty informs, the agency reports.

According to an estimation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), 95 tons of heroin are annually delivered to the world market from Afghanistan through Central Asia. "However, only 5 % is arrrested by the law enforcement bodies in this region and 7 more tons are consumed in Central Asia."

UNODC Acting Director-General Yury Fedorov visited CARICC office during his trip to Central and Western Asia. He positively estimated the results reached by the center during a short period of its existence. "Since the official opening last year, CARICC has already shown numerous successes. The platform of cooperation of CARICC has allowed closing more than 20 channels of delivery of drugs, to withdraw more than 250 kg of heroin, and 115 kg of opium. CARICC also supports coordination of operations on struggle against turnover of chemical substances used for illegal manufacture of heroin," Y. Fedorov said.
