China signed $45 billion in U.S. contracts

The United States and China signed a trade deal worth over $45 billion, the agency reports.

Almaty. January 20. Kazakhstan Today - The United States and China signed a trade deal worth over $45 billion, the agency reports.

The United States and China on Wednesday agreed on $45 billion in U.S. export deals and to give U.S. companies greater access to China's $88 billion-plus government contracts market at the start of Chinese President Hu Jintao's four-day state visit, Reuters reported.

The agreement came as US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao met for summit talks at the White House.

The deal is seen as part of China's efforts to fend off criticism by the Unites States of its trade imbalances with Beijing and slow progress in Chinese currency reform.

The deal "will help support an estimated 235,000 jobs in the Untied States," the White House said in a statement.

The deal sees China make purchases in sectors such as auto parts, agriculture, machinery and chemicals.

In addition, US companies signed 11 contracts for investments in China worth $3.24 billion. Among the US firms are General Electric Co. and Westinghouse Electric Co., a nuclear power unit of Japan's Toshiba Corp.
