Constitutional Council declared prolongation of presidential term unlawful

The Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan, having considered the appeal of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, regarding conformity of the law on the amendments and additions to the Constitution of Kazakhstan with Constitution of Kazakhstan, made the decision and declared that the amendments passed by the Parliament on extending presidential term of the current president until December, 2020 mismatch the existing constitutional norms, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Kazakhstan Today - The Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan, having considered the appeal of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, regarding conformity of the law on the amendments and additions to the Constitution of Kazakhstan with Constitution of Kazakhstan, made the decision and declared that the amendments passed by the Parliament on extending presidential term of the current president until December, 2020 mismatch the existing constitutional norms, Kazakhstan Today reports.

As informed earlier, the Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan started consideration of the appeal of the President of Kazakhstan on January 17th, 2011 in regards to conformity of the amendmnets and additions to the Constitution of Kazakhstan with the Constitution of Kazakhstan.

Earlier, the Kazakh parliament voted unanimously in favor of holding a referendum to extend Nazarbayev's time in office until 2020, bypassing elections due in 2012, RIA Novosti reported.

Nazarbayev, who has ruled the Central Asian state since the collapse of the Soviet Union, vetoed parliament's original call for a referendum, but the recent vote overrode his objections.

More than 5 million signatures of citizens were collected by an initiative group.
