Elections date announced in Turkmenistan

Almaty. December 27. Kazakhstan Today - The presidential elections in Turkmenistan will take place on February 11, 2007, the agency reports referring to the state Turkmenistan television. The decision was announced on Tuesday at the session of the highest authority representative body - Halk maslakhaty (National Council) of Turkmenistan, which took place in the Palace of spirituality of Turkmenbashi.

The National Council has already offered two nominees for the highest state post of Turkmenistan: the Vice Minister of Oil and Gas Industry and Mineral Resources Ishanguly Nurryev and Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports Durdy Durdyev.

The National Council adopted the law on presidential elections of Turkmenistan and the amendments to the Constitution of the country.

Before the elections, Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov, ex-Vice Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, was appointed the acting President of Turkmenistan.

According to the constitution of Turkmenistan, the President can be a citizen of the country who was born in the Republic, is not younger than 40 and not older than 70 years old, speaking the state language - Turkmen, have been living in the country within 15 years and working in the state bodies, public organizations or in the branches of the national economy.

The President is elected directly by the people of Turkmenistan for the period of 5 years and assumes the post immediately after taking the oath at the session of the National Council. According to the Constitution, the acting President of Turkmenistan cannot be proposed for the post of the President.

As it was informed earlier, the President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov died on December 21 from acute cardiac deficiency. On December 24, Turkmenbashi was buried in his patrimonial settlement Kypchak near Ashkhabad.
