European Union to alleviate sanctions against Uzbekistan
Moscow. October 18. Kazakhstan Today - European Union removed visa restrictions concerning some Uzbek officials. Other restriction - embargo on deliveries of weapons to this country remained in force. The decision was accepted on Monday at the session of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of 27 EU countries in Luxembourg, the agency reports.
At the same time, making the decision concerning Tashkent, Foreign Minister emphasized that the sanctions can be renewed, if Uzbekistan within six months do not demonstrate progress in the field of human rights.
As it was informed earlier, visa restrictions and embargo on deliveries of weapons were introduced in Uzbekistan in 2005 in connection with refusal of the leadership of the Republic to allow carrying out of the international independent investigation of disorders on May 13, 2005 in Andizhan that resulted in the death of 187 people.
The estimation of official Tashkent and the West of the Andizhan events was considerably opposite. The Uzbek authorities insisted on the version of the armed rebellion of the religious extremist organization. In the West, the event has been regarded as suppression of freedom of citizens of Uzbekistan.
