G8 summit opened on Japanese island Hokkaido

Almaty. July 8. Kazakhstan Today - G8 summit started its work on the Japanese island Hokkaido on Monday. The leaders of G8 from 22 developing countries, including Russia, are taking part in the summit, the agency reports referring to RIA Novosti.

According to the Russian agency, the participants of the meeting gathered in the hotel Windsor on the coast of Lake Toya where one of the main reserves of the island is located. The agenda of the summit includes the question of development of Africa and rendering assistance to the poorest countries.

Japan considers this meeting as continuation of the international conference on development of Africa (TICAD) held in May in the Japanese city, Yokohama.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Yasuo Fukuda, greeted participants of the summit and expressed hope for its successful carrying out.

G8 will gather on Tuesday. Bilateral negotiations between the leaders of the states will take place as well. The main theme of the summit - joining of efforts of the developed countries of the world in struggle against global warming. With this purpose Japan assumes to achieve from the countries-participants obligations to decrease emission of hotbed gases.

Discussion at the summit has become continuation of rough disputes of the last meeting of G8 in Germany when Germany and the USA did not agree on approaches of responsibility of the leading industrial powers for climate changes. The German delegation considered that G8 countries should incur the responsibility and develop new contract, which will replace in 2012 the present in history Kyoto Protocol on restriction of emissions of carbonic gas into the atmosphere. Counterparts from the USA believed that G8 should not sign to specific figures of emissions until other non G8 states polluting the atmosphere of the Earth sign it as well.

G8 leaders consider it necessary to complete negotiations on post-Kyoto process up to the end of 2009 and to accept the new agreement at the 15th conference of the UN Frame Convention on Climate Changes in December, 2009 in Copenhagen.

During a three-day summit its participants will discuss the problems of struggle against terrorism, rise of prices of oil and food stuffs, situations around nuclear programs of Iran and Northern Korea.
