Kazakh FM, NATO Secretary General discussed cooperation strengthening

Astana. October 5. Kazakhstan Today - The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kasymzhomart Tokayev being on the official visit to Brussels, on Wednesday discussed with NATO Secretary-General Yaap de Hoop Scheffer the questions of strengthening of cooperation of the Republic and the alliance in the sphere of defense and safety, Kazakh MFA press service informed the agency.

Kazakhstan diplomat took part in the session of NATO Council in the format 26+1 during which the course of realization of the Individual plan of action of partnership between Kazakhstan and Euro Atlantic alliance has been considered signed in January, 2006.

The same day the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued negotiations in the EU structure. K. Tokayev met the Secretary General of the EU Council - the Supreme EU representative concerning joint defense and safety Javier Solana and the External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.

During the exchange of opinions with H. Solana the Minister confirmed readiness of Kazakhstan to promote reconstruction of infrastructure of Afghani economy and normalization of the situation in this country.

During the talks B. Ferrero-Waldner the Commissioner proposed to develop the special formula of participation of Kazakhstan in the European policy of the neighborhood. The forthcoming visit of the EU Commissioner on external communications and the European policy of the neighborhood to Kazakhstan will become the first stage of consideration of this initiative, the press service noted.
