Kazakhstan and Japan have discussed promising areas of bilateral cooperation in nuclear disarmament, the responsible use of artificial intelligence and peaceful applications of nuclear energy, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
The talks were held between Kazakhstan’s ambassador, Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev, and Nobumasa Akiyama, director of the Japan Centre for Disarmament, Science and Technology.
"Noting the importance of the existing ties between Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Semey, the two sides agreed on the need to expand exchanges between research centres and civil society organisations in both countries that study the effects of nuclear testing on people and the environment," the ministry said.
Akiyama also stressed the importance of strengthening practical cooperation between the two countries to help build a world free of nuclear weapons.
The ministry noted that the centre plays an active role in preparing the annual Hiroshima Report on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Kazakhstan traditionally ranks highly in the Japanese assessment across key areas of nuclear security.
