Kazakhstan Parliament ratified Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to Convention on Biological Diversity

Today at plenary session Senate deputies passed the law on ratification of Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the agency reports. Joining the Protocol will enhance responsibility of the countries for realization on the territory of Kazakhstan activity connected with transboundary transportation of genetically modified organisms and products, to take measures on non-admission of their import in the country, and to provide close international cooperation.

Astana. May 29. Kazakhstan Today - Today at plenary session Senate deputies passed the law on ratification of Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the agency reports.

As it was informed earlier, joining the Protocol will enhance responsibility of the countries for realization on the territory of Kazakhstan activity connected with transboundary transportation of genetically modified organisms and products, to take measures on non-admission of their import in the country, and to provide close international cooperation, including mutual aid in research and scientific and technical development, as well as information exchange in the field of biotechnologies.

According to the legislative procedure, the law has been accepted by the Parliament and forwarded to the President to be signed into law.

The Protocol was signed on January 29, 2000 in Montreal.
