Kazakhstan supports unification of efforts of Europe and Asia in steady development - UN

Kazakhstan takes steps towards rapprochement of the European and Asian processes of transition to steady development with the purpose of their unification into uniform Eurasian process. The chairman of Environmental Protection Committee of Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nigmatulin stated in the UN headquarters in New York in the high level segment of Sustainable Development Commission on Friday, the agency reports referring to the UN news center.

Kazakhstan Today - Kazakhstan takes steps towards rapprochement of the European and Asian processes of transition to steady development with the purpose of their unification into uniform Eurasian process. The chairman of Environmental Protection Committee of Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nigmatulin stated in the UN headquarters in New York in the high level segment of Sustainable Development Commission on Friday, the agency reports referring to the UN news center.

Y. Nigmatulin informed with this purpose Astana will host the conference of ministers of ecology, economy and social protection of the countries of Asian-Pacific region in 2010, and in 2011 - Pan-European conference - Environment for Europe. Recently Kazakhstan initiated Earth summit on Sustainable Development and Environment in 2012.

E. Nigmatulin informed the UN member states representatives on achievements of Kazakhstan development in agriculture, land resources management, and struggle against drought and desertification.

"For Kazakhstan, where 70 % of its territory subject to a different degree of processes of desertification and degradation of land and where about 43 % of the population of the country (6.47 million people) live in rural areas and depend on agrarian sector, struggle against desertification and degradation of land has huge value," the Parliament representative declared.

He informed that Kazakhstan realizes the project of management of drought lands covering the territory of 11 rural districts with total area of 1.3 million hectares. Successful results have been already received. More than 25 thousand hectares of degraded land has been restored and more than 12 thousand trees and bushes have been planted.
