Kyrgyzstan elected to UN Council for Human Rights

Elections of 18 new members of the Council of the United Nations for Human Rights took place in the UN headquarters in New York during the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. Kyrgyzstan has been elected one of the members of the UN Council, the agency reports citing the press service of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

Kazakhstan Today - Elections of 18 new members of the Council of the United Nations for Human Rights took place in the UN headquarters in New York during the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. Kyrgyzstan has been elected one of the members of the UN Council, the agency reports citing the press service of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the press service, 174 out of 192 states of the United Nations have voted for Kyrgyzstan. Besides Kyrgyzstan, the USA, Russia, Norway, Belgium, Hungary, Mexico, Uruguay, Cuba, Senegal, Mauritius, Nigeria, Cameroon, Djibouti, China, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Bangladesh have been elected to the structure of the Council for the three-year period (2009 - 2012).

According to the press service, Kyrgyzstan was nominated in July, 2007 in order to assist the country's process of democracy development and strengthening of human rights protection.
