Masimov charged to create working group to research seismicity of western regions of Kazakhstan

Astana. May 13. Kazakhstan Today - The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Masimov charged to create a working group to research seismicity of the western regions of the Republic, on territory of which hydrocarbon raw materials are extracted. The task was assigned at the government meeting, the agency reports.

According to Vice Minister of Emergency Victor Petrov, one of the most probable reasons of the recent earthquake in the Western Kazakhstan oblast was "formation of vacuum during extraction of hydrocarbon raw materials." According to Petrov, the oblast needs a few seismic stations to define the reasons of the earthquake, which the region doesn't have."

According to akim of the Western Kazakhstan oblast Baktykozha Izmukhambetov, a 7 magnitude earthquake struck the region. "108 houses were destroyed in the epicenter, 34 of which were intended for pulling down. 50 houses need to be repaired. "Damage made more than 700 million KZT," the akim of the oblast emphasized. Izmukhambetov promised that everything will be reconstructed: houses, a school and a bridge. He noted "until now we do not have answers to three questions: probability of another earthquake, place of tectonic break, and the reason of the earthquake."
