President of Kyrgyzstan asks to write off external debt in exchange for protection of environment

Bishkek. September 24. Kazakhstan Today - The President of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otunbaeva, has asked to write off an external debt in exchange for protection of the environment. The Kyrgyzstan interim president said on Thursday at the UN General Assembly within the discussion of the Millennium Development Goals, the agency reports citing the provisional government's press service.

"We are appealing to the UN specialized organizations and, first of all, UNDP, to play a leading part in implementation of these programs in the Central Asian region," she underlined.

According to the news agency "24.kg", the management of Kyrgyzstan has addressed the international community with the offer to write-off its debts in exchange for the environmental programs not for the first time. Kyrgyzstan made such a request for the first time in 2002 at the Mountain Summit in Bishkek.

According to the Ministry of Finance of Kyrgyzstan, the external debt of the Republic is $2.5 billion. In includes both multilateral and bilateral credits received by Kyrgyzstan for the years of independence.
