Almaty. September 7. Kazakhstan Today - The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev at the Russian-Kazakh forum in Ust Kamenogorsk suggested resuming the work on the project of transfer of waters of Siberian rivers to the southern regions of Russia and Kazakhstan, the agency reports citing Vesti.Ru.

"Cooperation in the sphere of water resources is an important question for sustainable development of Russia and Kazakhstan," N. Nazarbayev underlined.

"Unfortunately, water supply has been always an issue. The drought has caused the Ural River to dry. It also negatively affects the population of the Ural-Caspian pool. We should work in common with our counterparts from the Peoples Republic of China on the Irtysh problem," Kazakhstan President said.

"We need to acknowledge that the attempts to solve the water security problem locally, in some areas and regions, do not give desirable results. We do not have a complex program on balanced use and protection of water resources.

"Why do not we resume working on the project of transfer of waters of Siberian rivers to the southern regions of Russia and Kazakhstan. In the long term, it could help to provide the Central-Asian region with potable water."
