Russia recognized independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, on Tuesday signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation, the agency reports.

Moscow. August 27. Kazakhstan Today - The President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, on Tuesday signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation, the agency reports.

According to the official site of the leader of the Russian Federation, "the President, guided by the international arrangements, will of Abkhazian and South-Ossetian people, and the recommendation of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and Council of Federation of the Russian Federation declared that Russia signed the Decrees on recognition of independence of the Republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia."

The leader of the state made the statement on the Russian TV in which he said that "the Georgian leadership, having infringed the Charter of the United Nations and the obligations of the international agreements, has started confrontation, the victims of which became peaceful people.

"Breakdown of the negotiation process, ignoring of the reached arrangements, political and military provocations, attacks on peacemaking forces - all this roughly broke the mode in the conflict zones established at support of the United Nations and OSCE," D. Medvedev emphasized.

He said that "on the night of August, 8, 2008 Tbilisi made the choice. Saakashvili chose genocide to achieve his political goals. He with his own hand crossed out all hopes for peaceful existence of the Ossetain, Abkhazian and Georgian people in one state. The people of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have repeatedly expressed on referenda in support of independence of the Republics. We understand that after what happened in Tskhinvali and what was planned in Abkhazia, they have the right to decide their destiny now," the President of the Russian Federation stated.

"Considering free will of Ossetian and Abkhazian people, being guided by the regulations of the UN Charter, the Declaration of 1970 principles of the international law, concerning friendship between the states, CSCE Helsinki Final Act 1975, and other basic international documents - I have signed Decrees on recognition by the Russian Federation of independence of South Ossetia and independence of Abkhazia," he concluded.
