Russia to provide Kyrgyzstan help for $450 million for withdrawal of American air base

Almaty. February 4. Kazakhstan Today - Russia will provide Kyrgyzstan financial help for the sum of $450 million and will cancel debt of $180 million in exchange for withdrawal of the American air base, the agency reports citing Kommersant.

According to the newspaper, during the negotiations with the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, the President of Kyrgyzstan, Kurmanbek Bakiev, who arrived in Moscow on Tuesday, "can count on satisfaction of all financial requests - first of all about granting to Bishkek financial help for the sum of $450 million and cancelation of $180 million of Kyrgyzstan debt to the Russian Federation. Moscow expects positive decision of the destiny of the American military base Gansi in the territory of Kyrgyzstan - the decision on its withdrawal can be accepted by the Parliament of the country today."

"For K. Bakiev today's visit to Moscow is one of the most important for the period of his presidency since 2005. Kyrgyzstan is experiencing a serious energy crisis - tax debts of the energy companies have exceeded $62 million. Uzbekistan has increased the price for gas from $145 up to $240 for one thousand cubic meters, which negatively affects the Kyrgyz budget. Negative trade balance of the country, following the results of 2008, has exceeded $2 billion. All this is occuring on the background of growing unemployment and the opposition, which directly threatens K. Bakiev's positions," the newspaper writes.
