South Korean President Thanks Tokayev for Assistance in Detaining Fraud Suspects

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung thanked Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for assistance in detaining and repatriating South Korean nationals suspected of involvement in voice phishing operations in Kazakhstan, the South Korean leader said in a post on X.

According to Lee, members of an organized criminal group from South Korea secretly entered Kazakhstan via Cambodia and Vietnam and engaged in voice phishing.

The suspects were detained in Kazakhstan and repatriated to South Korea two weeks later. An investigation is ongoing in South Korea.

Lee said the suspects were swiftly detained and returned home thanks to the "active support and cooperation" of President Tokayev and Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB).

"We express our sincere gratitude to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and all those involved," the South Korean president wrote.

Lee also expressed hope that he would be able to thank Tokayev in person at the Republic of Korea-Central Asia Summit, which he said is scheduled to take place next month.

Earlier, officials in Astana discussed preparations for the first Central Asia-Republic of Korea Summit.
