Turkish workers protest government labor bill

About ten thousand workers gathered in the capital Ankara to protest against a new government labor bill, the agency reports.

Almaty. February 4. Kazakhstan Today - About ten thousand workers gathered in the capital Ankara to protest against a new government labor bill, the agency reports.

The protesters responded to the water cannon and tear gas by throwing stones at the police. Television news channels put the size of the protest at up to 10,000 people, though a Reuters journalist present said it was less than half that number.

The workers were protesting against new employment legislation, currently being debated by parliament, which they argue will reduce workers' rights and allow employers to exploit unregulated labour.

The Associated Press informs the package of assorted legislation being debated in parliament includes measures pardoning penalties for unpaid taxes or fines, and increasing paternity leave from three days to 10.

If passed, the legislation would allow employers to relocate workers against their will, make workers - not employers - financially responsible for health benefit premiums, and allow employers to utilize interns and apprentices for four months without pay.

The government says the law is needed to create a more flexible labour model.

Opposition deputies were supporting the protest.
