The mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-speaking countries recognized the presidential elections in Kazakhstan as legitimate and corresponding to international standards.

"Election day passed in a calm work atmosphere; all phases of voting are assessed positively," the mission's head, Azerbaijan MP, Aydin Mirzazade, said at a press briefing on Monday, commenting on the preliminary results, Trend reported.

TurkPA mission visited six polling stations on election day. Mirzazade said that the mission received full access to observe the voting process.

Presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on Sunday. According to the CEC's preliminary information, the incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev leads with 95.5% of the votes.

Votes for the other three candidates are as following: Zhambyl Ahmatbekov - 1.4%, Mels Eleusizov - 1.2%, and Gani Kasimov - 1.9%.

According to Kazakh legislation, the final voting results should be summed up no later than April 12.

Mirzazade said that the CEC and election commissions in places created the proper conditions for Kazakh people to express their will, as media outlets ensured access to a wide spectrum of political views.

He stressed some technical shortcomings during the voting process, which, however, he said, are common to all modern elections, regardless of any country.

"A group of observers of TurkPA stresses that these shortcomings were not widespread and have not lead to consequences, based on which one could doubt the validity of the election results," Mirzazade said.

The voting process took place in a peaceful atmosphere in the presence of international observers, he said. Democratic elections confirmed the will of the people.

The elections were observed by 1,059 observers accredited to the country. The mission of the CIS (425) and the OSCE / ODIHR (357 people) are the most numerous. Also the elections were observed by over 250 foreign journalists.

Many observation missions will announce its preliminary assessment on Monday.
