UN to lead food crisis solution process - Ban Ki-moon

Almaty. April 15. Kazakhstan Today - The United Nations should lead the process of food crisis solution. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on April 14 in the UN headquarters in New York at the special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with participation of the World Trade Organization and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the agency reports referring to the UN press center.

According to the press center, at the meeting Ban Ki-moon drew attention to food crisis in the world that has impoverished 100 million people in the countries with low incomes. He emphasized that today not only short-term measures on maintenance of the urgent needs connected with famine, but also essential long-term expansion of manufacture grain need to be taken.

The Secretary General called for the coordinated actions on non-admission of huge negative political consequences of food crisis. He stated that the United Nations should head the process directed at resolution of this global problem.

Ban Ki-moon reminded that in November the world leaders will gather in Doha, Qatar to sum up Monterrey Consensus concerning financing development, accepted on March 22, 2002. They will estimate the development and will consider obstacles in a way of promotion in the sphere of support of efforts of the countries with the average level of income in the sphere of trade; support of efforts of the least developed countries, in the form of assistance to creation of trading potential; formation of steady financial markets.
