UNESCAP senior officials session to discuss reform of commission and reduction of poverty

Almaty. May 17. Kazakhstan Today - The session of senior officials of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) which is taking place on May 17-19 within the limits of the 63rd UNESCAP session in Almaty will discuss the reform of the commission and the issues of reduction of poverty in the region. The UN Assistant Secretary General, UNESCAP Executive Secretary Kim Hak-Su informed today at the session, the agency reports.

According to Kim Hak-Su, the experts of the commission member states will discuss social issues and regulation of process of globalization. "The secretariat prepared extensive set of documentation which should promote effective discussion of current and forthcoming UNESCAP activity with a view of promotion of regional cooperation and social and economic development," he noted.

"One of the documents is the report of the Executive Secretary on the work of the secretariat which was conducted after the 62nd session of the commission. It is the first document that covers regional problems and measures of response by UNESCAP," Kim Hak-Su said.

Kim Hak-Su reminded that the session of the senior officials is a part of preparation for the final part of the session of the commission - for the special anniversary UNESCAP session Achievement of the Objectives of Development of Millennium in the Asian-Pacific Region, which will take place on May 21.

As it was informed earlier, on May 21st the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev will deliver salutatory speech at the session of the ministers.
