Ban Ki Moon welcomed idea of creation of Mediterranean Union

Almaty. July 16. Kazakhstan Today - The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has supported the initiative on creation of the Mediterranean Union - the new international organization, the objective of which is strengthening relations between the countries of the region, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

Ban Ki Moon noted timeliness of creation of such union as nowadays struggle for peace and security demand joint efforts.

"This perspective multilateral initiative will form a basis for solution of complex transboundary problems facing the countries of the region and will create frameworks for joining of resources and development of joint actions," he stated.

He also emphasized that modern global problems, such as food crisis and change of climate, cannot be solved by one country, but by efforts of all states.

During the visit to Paris Ban Ki Moon met the leaders of Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, the Palestinian administration, Syria and Israel. During the dialogue with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of France Bernard Kushner he discussed the situation in Zimbabwe, peace-making mission in Chad and Central African Republic, Kosovo and Cyprian issues.

The UN Secretary General also met Ingrid Betankur, who was in hostage in Colombia for six years. He expressed deep respect for her courage. Ban Ki Moon invited Ingrid Betankur to take part in the forum in support of victims of terrorism, which will take place in New York this fall.
