China to build nuclear station in seismological Sichuan province

Feasibility report for construction of atomic power station in seismological Sichuan province will be submitted for consideration of the National Commission of Development and Reform, the agency reports referring to China Daily newspaper.

Almaty. July, 23. Kazakhstan Today - Feasibility report for construction of atomic power station in seismological Sichuan province will be submitted for consideration of the National Commission of Development and Reform, the agency reports referring to China Daily newspaper.

"Construction of the station will begin as soon as we receive approval and it will take approximately five years," the chairman of Institute of Nuclear Physics of China informed.

Construction of the object with capacity from 4 million up to 6 million kWh will require approximately 25 billion yuans ($3.7 billion). Last year a group of experts visited village Sanba in Sichuan, which has been planned as a site for construction of the first atomic power station of the region.

The expert group visited the village again after May earthquake and informed that there were no signs of damage of the site.

"Construction of the nuclear station is necessary for fast economic development of Sichuan," Assistant Secretary of Committee of Sichuan province said.

The province approximately receives 68 % of energy from hydroelectric power stations. Though, Sichuan has more potential of hydroelectric power in China, the province still has shortages during dry seasons.
