First conference of Frame Convention on protection of Caspian Sea environment opened in Baku

Baku. May 23. Kazakhstan Today - Today in Baku the first conference of the Frame Convention on protection of the sea environment of the Caspian Sea began its work, the agency reports.

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Guseyn Bagirov informed that the conference will take place at the level of the experts of ecological departments of five near-Caspian states on May 23-24. The parties will discuss procedural and financial rules of the conference; questions on organizational structure of the Frame Convention; the questions concerning management of ballast waters of the Caspian Sea and other measures for protection of the environment of the sea. On Friday, May 25, the conference will continue its work at the level of ministers and during the meeting the parties will sign the protocols.

The Frame Convention on protection of the sea environment of the Caspian Sea was signed on November 4, 2003 in Teheran by Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Later Turkmenistan joined the Convention.

The purpose of the Convention is protection of environment of the Caspian Sea from all sources of pollution and preservation and rational use of the resources of the Caspian Sea.
