In Kazakhstan, a pilot project on RFID vehicle tags to be launched

KazAvtoZhol National Company JSC launches a pilot project on RFID vehicle tags.
RFID tags will be used for contactless identification of vehicles, traffic intensity analysis on toll sections of highways, as well as for automatic charging for travel. It was reported by a press service of KazavtoZhol NC JSC.

According to the Company, RFID tags are radio frequency devices with a unique number which is able to automatically identify the data. On the base of the information of the RFID tag, barriers, gates or other barriers are controlled. If an RFID identification code is found on the windshield of the car, the system identifies the transport and allows non-stop charging on toll roads.

The tags will be distributed by operators at the collection points free-of-charge. The first distribution of 4000 tags will be on the section of the Astana-Shchuchinsk toll road, distribution of the first 80 000 tags will be held at the collection points of the "Almaty-Khorgos" road section.

The main advantages of the system are the contactless identification of the vehicle; contactless control of barriers; non-stop charging of fare; high protection degree; password protection; confident reading of the tags when speed is up to 200 km/h; stickers do not require built-in batteries.

This technology has been widely used in countries such as Taiwan, Turkey, Hungary, France, Portugal, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Norway, Japan.

It should be added that the sections of the Astana -Temirtau, Almaty-Kapshagay and Almaty-Khorgos roads with the total length of 469 km will be toll roads.

Designed specifications and estimates on the arrangement of a charging system in 13 sections with a total length of 5,500 km is developed. According to the project of public private partnership, the introduction of toll roads of national importance with a length of 15 thousand kilometers and its further operation for 10 years is planned until 2024.
