International legal experts expressed concern over discrimination of Krishna community

Almaty. May 14. Kazakhstan Today - The International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF) and Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRFW, IHF cooperating organization) expressed concern over oppression of Krishna community in Almaty region, the agency reports.

The international organizations are concerned by the judgment of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan that cancelled the earlier resolution on granting the right of use of the land to the Society for Krishna Consciousness in Karasay district. "We are afraid that the resolution can lead to further infringements of human rights concerning the community," the message widespread by the international organizations states.

In the observers' opinion, last events "cause serious suspicion that the community had been excluded from the process of privatization on grounds of religious affiliation."

In this connection legal experts called the authorities of Kazakhstan "to strictly observe the international standards of human rights... and to take all possible measures to solve the case of the Krishna community "in a peaceful, fair and unbiased manner."

As it was informed earlier, the conflict around the Krishna community has been proceeding since 2004, when the administration of Karasay district instigated judicial proceedings against the community members resulting in demolition of 13 houses in November 2006.
